The gross national product (GNP) measures the welfare of a nation’s economy through the aggregate of products and services produced in that nation. Although GNP is a proficient measurement of the magnitude of the economy, many economists, environmentalists and citizens have been arguing the validity of the GNP in respect to measuring welfare. They are calling for a green national product that would indicate if activities benefit or harm the economy and well-being. This new national product would differ from the traditional GNP by addressing both the sustainability and well-being of the planet and its inhabitants. / सकल राष्ट्रीय उत्पाद (जीएनपी) उस राष्ट्र में उत्पादित उत्पादों और सेवाओं के कुल के माध्यम से किसी देश की अर्थव्यवस्था के कल्याण को मापता है। यद्यपि जीएनपी अर्थव्यवस्था के परिमाण का एक कुशल माप है, कई अर्थशास्त्री, पर्यावरणविद और नागरिक कल्याण को मापने के संबंध में जीएनपी की वैधता पर बहस करते रहे हैं। वे एक हरे रंग के राष्ट्रीय उत्पाद की मांग कर रहे हैं जो इंगित करेगा कि गतिविधियों से अर्थव्यवस्था और कल्याण को लाभ होता है या नुकसान होता है। यह नया राष्ट्रीय उत्पाद ग्रह और उसके निवासियों की स्थिरता और कल्याण दोनों को संबोधित करते हुए पारंपरिक जीएनपी से अलग होगा।
