First presented in 1969, the award was presented by the Government of India to commemorate Dadasaheb Phalke's contribution to Indian cinema. Phalke (1870–1944), popularly known as the "Father of Indian Cinema", was an Indian filmmaker who directed India's first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra (1913).

The first recipient of the award was actress Devika Rani, who was honored at the 17th National Film Awards. As of 2021, there have been 51 awardees. Among them, actor Prithviraj Kapoor (1971) and actor Vinod Khanna (2017) are the only posthumous recipients. Kapoor's actor-filmmaker son, Raj Kapoor, accepted the award on her behalf at the 19th National Film Awards in 1971 and was himself a recipient at the 35th National Film Awards ceremony in 1987. [A] BN Reddy (1974) and B. Nagi Reddy (1986); with Raj Kapoor (1987) and Shashi Kapoor (2014); Lata Mangeshkar (1989) and Asha Bhosle (2000); BR Chopra (1998) and Yash Chopra (2001) are siblings who won the award. The most recent recipient of the award is actor Rajinikanth who was honored at the 67th National Film Awards ceremony. / 1969 में पहली बार प्रस्तुत किया गया, यह पुरस्कार भारत सरकार द्वारा दादासाहेब फाल्के के भारतीय सिनेमा में योगदान की स्मृति में पेश किया गया था । फाल्के (१८७०-१९४४), जिन्हें लोकप्रिय रूप से "भारतीय सिनेमा के पिता" के रूप में जाना जाता है, एक भारतीय फिल्म निर्माता थे, जिन्होंने भारत की पहली पूर्ण लंबाई वाली फीचर फिल्म, राजा हरिश्चंद्र (1913) का निर्देशन किया था । 

पुरस्कार की पहली प्राप्तकर्ता अभिनेत्री देविका रानी थीं , जिन्हें 17 वें राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों में सम्मानित किया गया था । 2021 तक , 51 पुरस्कार विजेता हो चुके हैं। उनमें से, अभिनेता पृथ्वीराज कपूर (1971) और अभिनेता विनोद खन्ना (2017) एकमात्र मरणोपरांत प्राप्तकर्ता हैं। कपूर के अभिनेता-फिल्म निर्माता बेटे, राज कपूर ने १९७१ में १ ९वें राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कारों में उनकी ओर से पुरस्कार स्वीकार किया और १९८७ में ३५वें राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कार समारोह में स्वयं प्राप्तकर्ता थे।  [ए] बीएन रेड्डी (1974) और बी. नागी रेड्डी (1986);  के साथ राज कपूर (1987) और शशि कपूर (2014);  लता मंगेशकर (१९८९) और आशा भोंसले (२०००); बीआर चोपड़ा (१९९८) और यश चोपड़ा (२००१) ये पुरस्कार जीतने वाले भाई-बहन हैं। पुरस्कार के सबसे हालिया प्राप्तकर्ता अभिनेता रजनीकांत हैं जिन्हें ६७वें राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कार समारोह में सम्मानित किया गया था ।
