Mahavira’s tribal affiliation is reflected in one of his later epithets, Nigantha Nataputta, which means literally “the naked ascetic of the Jnatrika clan.” /क्षत्रिय (योद्धा) जाति में जन्मे महावीर के पिता एक स्वदेशी कुलीन जनजाति, ज्ञानत्रिक कबीले के प्रमुख थे। महावीर की आदिवासी संबद्धता उनके बाद के एक विशेषण, निगंता नटपुत्त में परिलक्षित होती है, जिसका शाब्दिक अर्थ है “ज्ञानत्रिक वंश का नग्न तपस्वी।”
