Answer / उत्तर – महमूद गजनवी / Mahmud Ghaznavi

The glory and fame of this temple, located in the port of Veraval in Gujarat, was spread far and wide. The Arab traveler Al-Biruni wrote a description of this in his travelogue, which impressed Mahmud Ghaznavi, in 1025, attacked the Somnath temple, looted its property and destroyed it.

After this, King Bhima of Gujarat and Raja Bhoj of Malwa got it rebuilt. When the Delhi Sultanate captured Gujarat in 1297, it was again brought down. The process of reconstruction and destruction of Somnath temple continued.

गुजरात के वेरावल बंदरगाह में स्थित इस मंदिर की महिमा और कीर्ति दूर-दूर तक फैली थी. अरब यात्री अल बरूनी ने अपने यात्रा वृतान्त में इसका विवरण लिखा जिससे प्रभावित हो महमूद ग़ज़नवी ने सन 1025 में सोमनाथ मंदिर पर हमला किया, उसकी सम्पत्ति लूटी और उसे नष्ट कर दिया.

इसके बाद गुजरात के राजा भीम और मालवा के राजा भोज ने इसका पुनर्निर्माण कराया. सन 1297 में जब दिल्ली सल्तनत ने गुजरात पर क़ब्ज़ा किया तो इसे फिर गिराया गया. सोमनाथ मंदिर के पुनर्निर्माण और विनाश का सिलसिला जारी रहा.
