According to the scriptures of all Buddhist schools, the first Buddhist Council was held soon after the death of the Buddha at Rajagriha in Bihar around 400 B.C. It was held under the patronage of king Ajatashatru with the monk Mahakasyapa presiding. Its objective was to preserve the Buddha’s sayings (suttas) and the monastic discipline or rules (Vinaya)./सभी बौद्ध विद्यालयों के शास्त्रों के अनुसार, पहली बौद्ध परिषद का आयोजन बुद्ध की मृत्यु के तुरंत बाद बिहार के राजगृह में लगभग ४०० ईसा पूर्व में हुआ था। यह राजा अजातशत्रु के संरक्षण में भिक्षु महाकश्यप की अध्यक्षता में आयोजित किया गया था। इसका उद्देश्य बुद्ध की बातों (सूत्तों) और मठवासी अनुशासन या नियमों (विनय) को संरक्षित करना था।
