Article 17 of the constitution abolishes the practice of untouchability. Practice of untouchability is an offense and anyone doing so is punishable by law. The Untouchability Offences Act of 1955 (renamed to Protection of Civil Rights Act in 1976) provided penalties for preventing a person from entering a place of worship or from taking water from a tank or well. / संविधान का अनुच्छेद 17 अस्पृश्यता की प्रथा को समाप्त करता है। अस्पृश्यता का आचरण एक अपराध है और ऐसा करने वाला कोई भी व्यक्ति कानून द्वारा दंडनीय है। 1955 के अस्पृश्यता अपराध अधिनियम (1976 में नागरिक अधिकार संरक्षण अधिनियम का नाम बदलकर) ने किसी व्यक्ति को पूजा स्थल में प्रवेश करने या टैंक या कुएं से पानी लेने से रोकने के लिए दंड का प्रावधान किया।
