Explanation / व्याख्या :-

Lichens are used as air pollution indicators, especially of the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. If air is very badly polluted with sulphur dioxide there may be no lichens present, just green algae may be found. If the air is clean, shrubby, hairy and leafy lichens become abundant.

Lichens are plants that grow in exposed places such as rocks or tree bark. Rainwater having air pollutants especially sulfur dioxide, can damage lichens and prevent them from growing. This makes lichens natural indicators of air pollution.

लाइकेन का उपयोग वायु प्रदूषण संकेतक के रूप में किया जाता है, विशेष रूप से वातावरण में सल्फर डाइऑक्साइड की सांद्रता के लिए। यदि हवा सल्फर डाइऑक्साइड से बहुत बुरी तरह प्रदूषित है तो वहां कोई लाइकेन मौजूद नहीं हो सकता है, केवल हरी शैवाल मिल सकती है। यदि हवा साफ है, तो झाड़ीदार, बालों वाले और पत्तेदार लाइकेन प्रचुर मात्रा में हो जाते हैं।
