बोन्साई बौने पेड़ उगाने की जापानी कला है। अन्य पौधों की खेती प्रथाओं के विपरीत, बोन्साई भोजन या दवा के उत्पादन के लिए अभिप्रेत नहीं है। इसके बजाय, बोन्साई अभ्यास लंबी अवधि की खेती और एक कंटेनर में उगने वाले एक या एक से अधिक छोटे पेड़ों को आकार देने पर केंद्रित है। बोन्साई छोटे पेड़ों का उत्पादन करने के लिए प्रूनिंग, रूट रिडक्शन, पॉटिंग, डिफोलिएशन और ग्राफ्टिंग जैसी खेती की तकनीकों का उपयोग करता है जो परिपक्व, पूर्ण आकार के पेड़ों के आकार और शैली की नकल करते हैं।

‘बोनसाई’ शब्द मूल चीनी शब्द पेन्जाई का जापानी उच्चारण है। ‘बोन’ उस पात्र को कहते हैं जिसमें ये पौधे प्राय: उगाये जाते हैं। यह ट्रे के आकार का होता है।

Bonsai is the Japanese art of growing dwarf trees. By contrast with other plant cultivation practices, bonsai is not intended for production of food or for medicine. Instead, bonsai practice focuses on longterm cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees growing in a container. Bonsai uses cultivation techniques like pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting to produce small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature, full-size trees.

Bonsai means “dwarf plant” in Japanese. It is a Japanese art or technique of giving small size but attractive appearance to woody plants. These miniaturized plants can be grown in pots. Under this art, giving beautiful shape to plants, specific method of irrigation and methods of transplanting them from one pot to another. By keeping these dwarf plants in a group, the house can be made a lush garden. Bonsai plants are grown in pots in such a way that they retain their natural form but they remain dwarf in size. Bonsai can be placed anywhere throughout the house.

The word ‘bonsai’ is the Japanese pronunciation of the original Chinese word penzai. ‘Bone’ is called the vessel in which these plants are usually grown. It is in the shape of a tray.
