Sal is of the dry deciduous variety of tropical monsoon forest.मानसून वनों में पेड़ गर्मियों में लंबे समय तक सूखे के कारण लगभग छह से आठ सप्ताह तक अपनी पत्तियाँ गिरा देते हैं। ऐसे वनों के लिए उपयुक्त वर्षा 75 से 200 सेमी के बीच होती है। साल उष्णकटिबंधीय मानसून वन की शुष्क पर्णपाती किस्म का है।
