In Indian hisotry Forest Kingdom were referred to as the ‘Atavika rajya’. Their early reference is found in Mauryan period and major evidence of atavika rajyas are found during the reign of Gupta rulers Samudragupta when he brought it under his control. The forest kingdoms were situated in the present day Madhya Pradesh and south eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, which was called Atavika due to the abundance of forests.

भारतीय इतिहास में वन साम्राज्य को ‘अटविका राज्य’ कहा जाता था। इनका प्रारंभिक संदर्भ मौर्य काल में मिलता है और अटविक राज्य के प्रमुख साक्ष्य गुप्त शासक समुद्रगुप्त के शासनकाल के दौरान मिलते हैं जब उन्होंने इसे अपने नियंत्रण में लाया था। वन साम्राज्य वर्तमान मध्य प्रदेश और उत्तर प्रदेश के दक्षिण पूर्वी भाग में स्थित थे, जिसे वनों की प्रचुरता के कारण अटविका कहा जाता था।
