Chauth and Sardeshmukhi were the two important taxes collected during the time of Shivaji. Chauth was only a means of buying off one robber and not a subsidiary system for the maintenance of peace and order against all enemies. Thus Chauth was a military contribution paid towards off any attack of the Marathas. Sardeshmukhi was an additional tax of 10% which Shivaji claimed as the hereditary Sardeshmukhi or overlord of Maharashtra.
चौथ और सरदेशमुखी शिवाजी के समय में वसूले जाने वाले दो महत्वपूर्ण कर थे। चौथ केवल एक लुटेरे को खरीदने का एक साधन था और सभी दुश्मनों के खिलाफ शांति और व्यवस्था बनाए रखने के लिए एक सहायक प्रणाली नहीं थी। इस प्रकार चौथ मराठों के किसी भी हमले के लिए दिया जाने वाला एक सैन्य योगदान था। सरदेशमुखी 10% का एक अतिरिक्त कर था जिसे शिवाजी ने महाराष्ट्र के वंशानुगत सरदेशमुखी या अधिपति के रूप में दावा किया था।
