The Portuguese were the first European who discovered the sea-route to India. They encounter with the Indian Sub-continent after Vasco da Gama reached Calicut on Malabar coast in 1498AD. In 1503AD, the Portuguese had established their first fort in Cochin in India.
पुर्तगाली पहले यूरोपीय थे जिन्होंने भारत के लिए समुद्री मार्ग की खोज की थी। 1498 ई. में वास्को डी गामा के मालाबार तट पर कालीकट पहुँचने के बाद उनका भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप से सामना हुआ। 1503 ई. में पुर्तगालियों ने भारत में कोचीन में अपना पहला किला स्थापित किया था।
