He was a moderate leader and a lawyer by profession, he served the provincial and central legislature for many terms.Through his efforts, a memorial was built at the Jallianwala Bagh site. He founded the Nationalist Party in 1926. He was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. He served as the editor of Hindustan, Abyudaya, and the Indian Union. He was posthumously conferred with Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, on 24 December, 2014, a day before his 153rd Birth Anniversary.
