भारतीय राष्ट्रवादियों के भारी विरोध के बावजूद 1905 में भारत के वायसराय लॉर्ड कर्जन के अधीन बंगाल का विभाजन हुआ। 16 अक्टूबर 1905 को बंगाल के विभाजन के खिलाफ कलकत्ता के टाउन हॉल में स्वदेशी आंदोलन की घोषणा की गई। जब देश की राजधानी कलकत्ता से दिल्ली स्थानांतरित की गई, तो पूर्वी बंगाल और पश्चिम बंगाल एक हो गए।
