Sanchi was rediscovered after 600 years by Bengal Cavalry of Britishers in 1818. The discovery is attributed to General Henry Taylor. The town of Sanchi, the abode of one of the principal Buddhist sites in located in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The Buddhist monuments there were awarded the status of UNESCO World Heritage site in 1989. The Sanchi Stupa is the centre of attraction in the town. Its foundation was laid by King Ashoka. He builds a hemispherical mound over the relics of Buddha. Later expansion of Stupa took place during the time of the Shunga, the Satvahnas and the Gupta period. The victory of Chandragupta II has been carved on the railing of the Stupa as an inscription.
सांची को 600 वर्षों के बाद 1818 में अंग्रेजों की बंगाल कैवेलरी द्वारा फिर से खोजा गया था। इस खोज का श्रेय जनरल हेनरी टेलर को दिया जाता है। सांची शहर, मध्य प्रदेश राज्य में स्थित प्रमुख बौद्ध स्थलों में से एक है। वहाँ के बौद्ध स्मारकों को 1989 में यूनेस्को विश्व धरोहर स्थल का दर्जा दिया गया था। सांची स्तूप शहर में आकर्षण का केंद्र है। इसकी नींव राजा अशोक ने रखी थी। उन्होंने बुद्ध के अवशेषों पर एक अर्धगोलाकार टीला बनवाया। बाद में शुंग, सातवाहन और गुप्त काल के दौरान स्तूप का विस्तार हुआ। स्तूप की रेलिंग पर चंद्रगुप्त द्वितीय की विजय को शिलालेख के रूप में उकेरा गया है।
