Around September, with the sun fast retreating south, the northern land mass of the Indian subcontinent begins to cool off rapidly. With this air pressure begins to build over northern India, the Indian Ocean and its surrounding atmosphere still holds its heat. This causes cold wind to sweep down from the Himalayas and IndoGangetic Plain towards the vast spans of the Indian Ocean south of the Deccan peninsula. This is known as the Northeast Monsoon or Retreating monsoonसितंबर के आसपास, जब सूर्य तेजी से दक्षिण की ओर पीछे हटता है, भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप का उत्तरी भूभाग तेजी से ठंडा होने लगता है। इस वायुदाब के कारण उत्तरी भारत पर दबाव बनना शुरू हो जाता है, हिंद महासागर और उसके आस-पास का वातावरण अभी भी अपनी गर्मी बनाए रखता है। इसके कारण हिमालय और इंडोगंगेटिक मैदान से ठंडी हवाएँ डेक्कन प्रायद्वीप के दक्षिण में हिंद महासागर के विशाल विस्तार की ओर बहती हैं। इसे पूर्वोत्तर मानसून या पीछे हटता हुआ मानसून कहा जाता है
